September 4, 2019 – Minnowtech, LLC, an aquaculture technology company that provides an imaging platform to enable shrimp farmers to measure shrimp abundance to optimize feeding, announced today it has been invited to pitch at the Fish 2.0 Global Innovation Forum in Stanford, California, November 4-6, 2019.
Fish 2.0 is a non-profit organization that connects seafood businesses and investors to grow the sustainable seafood sector. As part of Fish 2.0’s venture competition program, Minnowtech has been selected to be among its “Fish 2.0 40,” representing the cohort of competition finalist startups that will make their pitches to the Fish 2.0 audience of global investors.
“We’re delighted to have this opportunity to present Minnowtech at Fish 2.0’s Global Innovation Forum,” said says Minnowtech CEO Suzan Shahrestani, PhD. “With our technology, our goal is to help shrimp farmers have clearer visibility into the health of their harvests and allow them to make informed decisions in the best interest of their crops. Our marine scientists are focused on building our technology to maximize farmers’ efficiency to meet growing global demand for shrimp.”
Fish 2.0’s program is a year-long initiative for companies that aim to pitch to investors at the annual Fish 2.0 Global Innovation Forum. As part of this process, Minnowtech completed its first-round pitch at Fish 2.0’s regional workshop and pitch session in November 2018 at Baltimore’s Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET). In February 2019, Minnowtech was selected “Fish 2.0 Qualified” in the second round of the competition based on a scored “readiness assessment.”
Minnowtech, which launched in 2018, continues to gain momentum in its product development and customer outreach efforts. Last June, Minnowtech was awarded a $225,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The NSF grant, formally titled “SBIR Phase I: Sonar Arrays for Maximizing Aquaculture Yields,” will support Minnowtech’s product optimization and enable field trials through Summer 2020.
In addition, Minnowtech’s Dr. Shahrestani pitched at the HATCH Ireland Demo Day in December 2018 and was selected by Hatch as “Best Contributor” for doing the most to embody “the spirit of the accelerator process.” Minnowtech, in 2018, was part of HATCH’s 90-day accelerator program, which helps support the launch of disruptive aquaculture startups.
